Daviess County, Missouri
Daviess County was officially organized on December 29, 1836, carved from Ray County in northwestern Missouri. It was named in honor of Major Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, a Kentucky soldier who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
The county seat is Gallatin, a town rich in pioneer heritage and courthouse history. Daviess County played a notable role in early Missouri settlement patterns, with waves of migration shaping its rural communities, churches, and schools. The area is also historically significant for its connection to the Mormon War of 1838, including the Gallatin Election Day Battle and the Haun’s Mill aftermath.
Today, Daviess County is home to Jamesport, the largest Amish community in Missouri, offering a living link to 19th-century traditions. Its cemeteries, land records, and township histories provide a rich resource for genealogists tracing family roots across the Midwest frontier.
